Slip Rings

In order to achieve the accelerated measurement speed, slip rings were chosen to provide the electrical connection between the search coil and the data acquisition systems. A slip ring is an electro-mechanical device that allows transmission of power and electrical signals from a stationary to a rotating structure.

The electrical connection is made between a series of rings (on the rotating part) and a corresponding number of brushes (on the stator). Slip rings come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with varying number of leads and quality of signal transmission depending on the application. For this particular application, a high-fidelity data-quality slip ring will be necessary.

Slip rings typically degrade in quality because non-conducting or semi-conducting particles collect on the electrical contacts between the rings and brushes. In harsh environments, the brushes could wear-out quickly, leading to drastically reduced performance in a short period of time.
