Overview

Each year the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) hosts a unique Student Design Competition (SDC) at its Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC). The teams competing in 2017 competition have been tasked with the development of a multi-functional robotic platform to compete in a series of five athletic-based competitions: a sprint, tennis ball throw, stair climb, golf ball hit, and weight lift. The 2017 competition will be held April 22, 2017 at Tennesse Tech University.


Project Objective

Design a remote controlled multifunctional robot capable of lifting, throwing, and hitting while maintaining a high degree of mobility.


Competition Constraints

  • A box of dimensions (50 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm) must contain: Robot, Weight to be lifted, Batteries, Controller.
  • Batteries must be rechargeable.
  • All energy must be returned to its original form, this includes: compressed air, springs.

  • Competition Events

    Event 1: The Sprint

    Devices will be placed behind a start/finish line and must travel 10 meters in a straight line, touch a fixed wall (at least 8 cm high) and return to the start/finish line.

    Event 2: The Lift

    Devices must lift a weight as high as possible. When the weight has reached the maximum height, the weight must remain stationary with no controlling action performed by the team to allow the judges to measure the lift height.

    Event 3: The Throw

    Devices must throw a tennis ball as far as possible.

    Event 4: The Climb

    Devices will be placed in a 1 m x 1 m marked starting area on the ground in front of a set of three steps. The height of each step will be no less than 8 cm, and no more than 15 cm. The steps may be of differing or the same heights. The horizontal landing area of each step will be at least 50 cm x 50 cm.

    Event 5: The Hit

    Devices must hit a golf ball initially resting on the ground, making it fly as far as possible. Devices will remain in a fixed location during the attempt.
