Glo-Copter” Maple Seed inspired toy
-
Glo-Copter Product Ad
- Cool toy that can fly several hundred feet high from its launcher and float back down.
- We could, potentially, buy one to test and to study flight characteristics on a larger scale than an actual seed.

X-zylo Maple Seed Copter

Product Page
- This maple seed copter launches up to 100 feet into the air and floats down smoothly; video shows groups of them falling, similar to the idea of dropping a payload of maple seeds over a battlefield.

In-dept study of Maple seed (Samara) Flight Characteristics
-
Study
- An in-depth study covering the morphology of different maple seed shapes and their differing flight characteristics. This could be useful in determining what shape to make our maple seeds to achieve the correct dispersal. It also suggest that we could make a variety of shapes to allow for even dispersal when using a full-payload simultaneous drop rather than a sequential drop.
- Important Notes
- Descent rate is significantly related to sqrt(wing loading) and to weight
- Study does not take into account the transient free-fall behavior before steady-state autorotative flight. This is consistent with our project because we can probably ignore transient behavior because of the very large initial height from which the seeds will be dropped. This hypothesis will need to be mathematically verified after scaling to ensure that the transient behavior will stabilize long enough before impact with the ground to allow the system to settle to its steady-state response.
- Useful tables of data are provided within the paper and should be examined closely when discussing wing shapes.
