Imperial Nurseries, Inc was founded in 1955 as part of the American Sumatra Tobacco Corporation. Our original operations consisted of two acres of field-grown stock in Windsor, CT. Over the next decade, Imperial growing areas expanded rapidly to over 600 acres under cultivation by 1964. In 1967, we began growing container nursery stock at our Florida location. That year also marked the purchase of American Sumatra by the General Cigar Corporation, later to become Culbro Corporation.
In 1975, Imperial's Connecticut
Operations moved to our current location in Granby and East Granby, CT.
Our original Windsor, CT farm was
converted to our first wholesale service center in 1976.
Today, Imperial is one of the top growers of nursery stock in North America.
In addition to our Connecticut and Florida farms, we operate seven
Sales and Service Centers located in major metropolitan areas of the Northeast,
Mid-Atlantic and Midwest. These service centers carry a full line
of
nursery stock from Imperial and other fine growers and a complete
assortment of tools, seed, fertilizers and other hardlines for the
landscaping and garden center professional.
In 1997, Culbro Corporation split into two operating companies. Imperial
Nurseries is now a proud part of Griffin Land & Nurseries, Inc, a publicly
traded company. (NASDAQ: GRIF).
