Slip on only one slip system cannot produce an arbitrary shape change for a crystal.
It can only produce a shear strain in one direction, somewhat analogous to the shape change that occurs when a deck of playing cards is subjected to a shear stress and each successive card is displaced from the one below by a given amount [shown schematically in Fig.11-10(a)].
A zinc single crystal oriented for this type of single slip is shown in Fig.11-10 (b).
Note the slip steps on the surface.
These steps are parallel to the slip plane, and each step represents the motion of thousands of dislocations on a given slip plane since all individual dislocations will produce a slip step of only =2A.
