Enable modem dial-up sounds

Initially, I had no dialing sounds when my modem was dialing in. I fixed it, although I do not quite know how. I suspect, the modem is a sound device on the "volume control" drop down box. Do you have to log off before the setting is activated? Do you need to enable sound settings from the System/ Services/ menu?
