Senior Design 2017-2018

About

Our mission is to help create a competitive and more efficient manufacturing design for 3D printing practices. Through teamwork, diversity, and integrity, we aspire to make the additive manufacturing process a feasible and effective option for all aspects of mass production. This report addresses all our preliminary work done prior to and including the measure phase of the project.

About DeXter Robot

The DeXter robot is a 3D printing robot which utilizes SCARA arm technology, a technology developed to reduce print times of single and multi-material builds. Team 24 is tasked with designing and optimizing a pic-and-place end effector that can grab lightweight cylindrical objects and move them to the print bed, and as designing a tool changer capable of automatically and efficiently changing the end effectors attached to the arms. The goal for this technology is to equip the DeXter robot with a pic-and-place tool which will expand its manufacturing capabilities, and to enable the DeXter robot to efficiently and automatically change between the various tool heads required during for continuous operation. With two SCARA arms, the DeXter robot will have the ability to print, mill, pic-and-place, or utilize any combination of the tools to minimize overall production time.

Project Scope

Description

The scope of our project divides in two, the Pic-and-Place Tool and the Tool Changer.
Our group is in charge of determining the pic-and-place to be purchased that can be modified and utilized with the DeXter and its tool changer; as well as to design and simulate a tool changer that can automatically change out this tool head. We can assume that the DeXter is on a moving platform and automatically approaches the tool changer when it is ready to change tools.

Pic-and-Place Tool Head

Deliverables

  • Purchased

  • Should be able to grab objects between 1mm in diameterand 10 cm long

  • Decrease weight of end effector.

Tool Changer

Deliverables

  • Design and simulation.

  • Must hold at least 4 tools.

  • Should be fully automated.

  • Optimize down time of DeXter system.

The ultimate goal of the DeXTer is to be able to be a comprehensive system that can be integrated into manufacturing plants to better optimize the production of whatever is needed to be fabricated. The DeXter is a large goal of the desire of our sponsor to be able to integrate robotics into the manufacturing world especially that of additive manufacturing.

Presentation & Documentation

Exceeding Your Expectations

Define Phase Presentation

In the define phase our group was in charged of recollecting the necessary data in order to analyze and finally define the problem of the project. In this phase the group develop: customer contract, define the scope, develop a task analysis among other things.

Measure Phase Presentation

In the measure phase our group was in charged of quantify the problem. The group analyze some problems features such as: improvement and weights of the design, weight of the optical fiber, strength of motors, possible failures of the design, among other things.

Analyze Phase Presentation

In the analyze phase our group was in charged of utilizing different statistical methods in order to analyze some of the failures that the product might have. An FMEA and a decision matrix was created in order to analyzed the features that can trigger failures in the product.

Improve Phase Presentation

In the improve phase our groups was in charged of implementing the solution in order to solve the different pro

Control Phase Presentation

In the control phase the group was in charged of maintaining the previously improvement that were made in order for the product to be delivered as expected. This is the last phase of the DMAIC methodology and also is the phase on which the group must meet the project scope and deliverable

Business Analysis Report

The business analysis report will show every single detail that is related to the project this includes: statistical graphs, final designs , costs, deliverable among many others.

We will be using several methodologies to develop our solutions. The DMAIC methodology is one that we have to undergo where the steps stand for define, measure, analyze, improve, and control .  This methodology is a type of 6 sigma methodology, a type of methodology that is geared towards making processes, group, corporations, and planning to be more efficient and effective
