The development
of a quick method to test and characterize sealing rings is needed in order to
standardize and expedite the selection process. The creation
of this scientific method will give engineers the ability to accurately predict
the performance of the selected sealing ring within a certain
tolerance. This method will involve parameters such as shape factor, crush
value, and sealing pressure in order to best apply the data to practical use. This
is a crucial step for the project sponsor, Cummins, Inc., in that costs will be
reduced in the form of time saved during the design process and less material
being used in the finished parts. This new process could also potentially be
used for quality assurance when used with the supplier’s products.
