Activity #1: Noodle Bridge

Design:

• We decided to design the bridge using what we had noodle wise (lasagna, manicotti, ziti, etc).
• We discussed whether to use trusses or just strong supports and decided on the strong support method because it would use less noodles and glue. Also, we discussed the structural strength of having and internal trusses and whether the having the internal trusses vertical or horizontal would be stronger.

Construction:

• We created the supports using large, angular, tube noodles. They were apoxied to layers of lasagna that were glued together. The “internal trusses” were made with small circular noodles laid out horizontally side by side to hold up the second layer of lasagna noodles that act as the road.
• We used multiple apoxies and quickly learned how fast or slow they dried and that some of them get quite hot when the chemicals mix.
